Physical, Occupational or Speech therapy only succeeds with hard work and determination. It’s a way of healing and it takes time. A lot of time.
Sure, it may be challenging and even frustrating on several occasions, but going through it will help improve your loved ones’ quality of life.
Don’t let them quit halfway. Make their previous efforts count! Keep your senior loved ones up for the tasks by:
- 1. Assigning them with small goals. Go for something feasible so your senior loved ones can see how much they have improved in a short span of time. You can try discussing this with your therapist. Don’t forget to ask them for a copy of the results after each session, so you can easily track your senior loved ones’ progress!
- 2. Giving them affirmation. Everyone needs someone to believe in them. Offering words of encouragement can never hurt. Saying “good job!”, or “you did well!” can sometimes be all a person needs to stay motivated. Give it a try. You’ll be surprised to see how well it works.
- 3. Encouraging them to make use of technology. There are a lot of devices and apps your senior loved one can use to help them cope with therapy. A pedometer app could entice them to take more steps during a walk or a language app could help them practice pronouncing certain sounds. Choose what you think might help and see what works best.
- 4. Letting them work with some music. Music has a lot of power. It can even evoke a positive response and affect our mood as well. You can use music during a physical or occupational therapy session (make sure you discuss it with your therapist beforehand). Or, you could use music as a means to relax and relieve the mind and body of fatigue.
- 5. Asking them how therapy is going. Check in with your senior loved one from time to time. You can inquire about how the whole session went, or how it made them feel. Sometimes, it helps when we have someone who is there to listen. That might just be what your senior loved ones need right now.
Therapy works in a lot more ways than just helping your senior loved ones heal physically. It also improves the way they feel about themselves, it encourages them to be more social, and it prevents them from dwelling on the negative things.
All in all, therapy gives your senior loved ones a small push so they can regain the strength that they thought they lost.
